Today, Nordic Trout published the very first Corporate Sustainability report in the Finnish fish farming industry.

“Fish farming is a sustainable and environmentally friendly activity, which is weighed down by old views from the 80s. For some reason, we haven't managed to communicate how great and responsible this industry is. I hope that this Corporate Sustainability report opens peoples’ eyes and helps them realize this,” says Hanna Peltokangas, HR and Sustainability Director at Nordic Trout.

The journey of a fish from fish eggs to the dinner plate is completely open and transparent.

“For us, it’s exceptionally easy to assess our value chain, because we own it. We can therefore be sure that we operate responsibly across our entire value chain and we are very proud of this. In accordance with our core values, we can say that we know our fish,” says Peltokangas.

The environment thanks you for efficient fish farming

The nutrient load from fish farming is very small, and rainbow trout do not endanger the domestic fish stocks.

“We are committed to responsible food production. A particular development target for us is the continuous improvement of the feed factor. This is sustainability at its best, because the more efficiently the feed ends up in the fish's stomach instead of nature, the better the fish grows, and at the same time this further reduces the load on the environment.”

Improving the feed factor has meant not just the development of internal processes, but also considerable investments, for example, in feeding systems, and in monitoring systems for water quality, oxygen level and temperature. These investments make the work of the employees easier, guarantee better quality and make feeding more efficient.

“However, no automation can yet replace our uniquely skilled employees who take care of the health and well-being of our fish,” Peltokangas says.

Sustainability became a core value

At Nordic Trout, the fish grow in their natural environment, which means that the group is also at the mercy of nature. This gives us humility and respect for the diversity of nature.

“For us, it’s natural to act with respect for water, fish, the environment and people. That's why sustainability also plays such a big role in our strategy and core values,” says Hans-Mikael Helenius, CEO of Nordic Trout.

In the future, Nordic Trout will be publishing information about their activities annually in a Corporate Sustainability report.

“Naturally, we operate every day sustainably and in compliance with environmental permits. We openly tell you what we do, as part of taking care of the well-being of the fish and nature. With this report, we are sharing information and increasing the transparency of the industry so that old views can be brought up-to-date and into the 2020s,” Peltokangas says.
